The main international airport in Windhoek is the Hosea Kutako International Airport. It serves direct flights to international destinations such as Cape Town, Frankfurt and Luanda, to name a few. The airport, which is named after Namibian nationalist leader and hero Hosea Kutako, is located only 45 kilometres east of the city. Meanwhile, another airport, Windhoek Eros Airport, handles most of the direct domestic flights to destinations such as Katima Mulilo, Ondangwa and Rundu, among others. This airport is located in the Khomas region.
The hot springs
Windhoek’s traditional names, ǀAiǁGams and Otjomuise, translate to ‘hot springs’ and ‘place of steam’, respectively. The names supposedly refer to the hot springs located near the city centre. A favourite leisure destination of locals and discerning travellers, the springs are also said to be a highly beneficial resting point for people with rheumatism.
There are more things to do and visit other than the hot springs to which the capital city of Namibia is named for. Windhoek’s modernity presents a stark contrast to the deserts and wilderness of Namibia. There are shopping centres, restaurants and cafes found around Independence Avenue. Museums cover Namibia’s natural and national histories. The National Botanical Garden is a green lung that showcases Namibia’s flora while for the fauna, there are two major game parks found in the city, Daan Viljoen and Hardap Game Park.
The gateway to the country is a great starting point to see the game safaris, desert landscapes and the true Namibian experience. The civilised city could be a contrast to that of the entire country but it surely is one that is not to be missed on a campervan trip.
