Namibia’s largest coastal city
Juxtaposed against the Namib Desert is the urban city of Swakopmund. The city, which is Namibia’s largest coastal city, is located on the coast of western Namibia and is 280 kilometres east of Windhoek, the capital city. It’s name is German for “Mouth of Swakop”, a major river found in the west. Being in Swakopmund is like being in another place other than Namibia. It’s architecture showcases the city’s German and European origins.
There are a lot of places you can go to in Swakopmund. One of the most famous is the Swakopmund Museum which houses a collection of artifacts, photos and videos of the Namibians. The museum is relatively small but the information from Namibia’s history, anthropology and architecture is fascinating.
The National Marine Aquarium of Namibia can also be found in Swakopmund. Only a kilometre away from the museum, take a two minute drive to see and learn about Namibia’s aquatic animals including, different types of fishes and sharks, crabs, Kelp Gull. White Pelicans, Octopus and Green Turtles. Swakopmund is also known for the iconic Swakopmund Jetty, an old jetty previously used for moorings.
Recreation in the city is one of its famous attractions. For the adventurous soul, there are various activities that can be done like sand boarding, quad biking, dune carting, parachuting, hot air ballooning, deep sea fishing, shark fishing and beach angling, to name a few. Go on a spectacular road trip experience with a campervan now! Visit other places in Namibia such as Oshakati, Sesreim and Tsumeb.
Nearby, outside the city, one of the only five all-grass desert golf courses in the world can be found. Rossmund Desert Golf Course is only six kilometres via B2 road. Also close to the city are camel farm and the Martin Luther steam locomotive that was left in the desert of Skeleton Coast.
