Of canyons and dunes
Sesriem is close to the southern end of the Naukluft Mountains in the Namib Desert in Namibia. The name was derived from the early pioneers who wanted to get water from the canyon. They tied ‘ses leer riems’, which translates to ‘six leather thongs’ in Afrikaan, to the handle of their buckets in order to collect water from pools. Then, in the long run, the name became Sesriem.
The canyon they take water from is called the Sesriem Canyon. This important tourist attraction in Sesriem was carved by the Tsauchab river. The canyon stretches for about four kilometres from Sesriem and is only two metres wide in some places. The natural wonder is not only visited by tourists but also animals to take advantage of the water that is found in a certain portion.
A campsite will be the least of your worries as you take your campervan for a spin in Sesriem and its surroundings as it houses about 24 of them for backpackers and travellers. the campsites are shaded by plenty camelthorn trees and are fully equipped with camping facilities such as basic groceries, fireplaces, tap water, petrol station, showers, toilets and wash basins. However, it is important to book the campsites in advance as there is high demand especially in the peak months.
The small settlement is known to the ‘Sesriem gate’ and for good reason. The gate provides easy access to the Namib-Naukluft National Park. This park, which encompasses part of the Namib Desert, is the largest game park in Africa, the fourth largest in the world and is home to Namibia’s main visitor attraction, the Sossusvlei dunes. Stop here and you will find the famous Elim Dune, Dune 45 (the most photographed dune in the world), Big Daddy (the highest dune in the Sossusvlei area and the Petrified Dunes. With your campervan, discover more about Namibia and drive your way to its magnificent towns like Otjiwarongo, Okomitundu and Palmwag.
