In the Kunene region lies one of Namibia’s most spectacular paradises, the Palmwag Lodge. It is a nature reserve that encompasses 400,000 hectares of land half-way between Swakopmund and the Etosha National Park. The reserve is best known for having the largest population of the critically endangered black rhinos in Africa and is protected by a local organisation called Save the Rhino Trust.
Palmwag Lodge is found in the reserve. The scenic and breathtaking surroundings are home to Africa’s teeming wildlife. Wildlife in Palmwag include the famous desert elephants, rare black rhinos, giraffes, mountain zebras, springboks, kudus and gemsbok, among other wild animal species. In the lodge, you will also be able to see the concession area of the lodge through an open 4x4 vehicle. You can also go on guided rhino tracking excursions from the Rhino Rangers and Save the Rhino Trust.
Palmwag is located in north-western Damaraland where you can take your campervan on a trip to. Here you will be able to visit the Spitzkoppe. From the lodge, drive your motorhome along the D2163 road and you’ll get there in about five hours. Though it is not the tallest, it is the most well-known mountain in Namibia. The 700 million year old mountain is made up of granite.
