The Cheetah Capital of the World
Otjiwarongo is one of Namibia’s most developed cities and is considered one of its oldest towns. It also has one of the towns that have the largest German-speaking population with great German influence largely evident in the city’s buildings. The capital of the region of Otjozondjupa, it is its biggest centre while also housing excellent facilities, private game-farms and nature reserves. In Otjiherero, a language in Namibia, Otjiwarongo means “pleasant place” or “place where the fat cattle graze”.
The city is now known to be the “Cheetah Capital of the World” and is home to about more than 3,000 cheetahs. The Cheetah Conservation Fund, a research and education centre for cheetahs founded in in 1990, spearheads the research, education and ecology to allow the cheetah’s protection and ensuring its future in the planet. The reserve is open to visitors and have access to a safari tour where you will be able to view females cheetahs. A well-equipped museum can also be visited where information about them can be explored.
The Waterberg Plateau Park or the Waterberg National Park is located 68 kilometres south-east of Otjiwarongo and will only take you less than two hours driving your campervan. The drive itself will give you splendid views of the nearing plateau. There are guided tours and will be able to see wild animals such as giraffes, and some waterholes. The park also aims to breed rare and endangered species.
Otjiwarongo is where the some of Namibia’s biggest cattle-breeding companies can be found thus the origin of its name. However, Otjiwarongo is also home to the Crocodile Ranch where Nile Crocodiles are bred and taken care of. There are also some ranch tours where you can learn about the large prehistoric creatures.
