The beautiful Loire
Tours, in the central west of France, is situated on the edge of the beautiful and well-known Loire River in the Loire Valley. It is the perfect place to learn more about French wine and to explore the castles of the Loire region. This picturesque city is recognised as a centre of art and history and is listed with the UNESCO world heritage listing. Foreign visitors have dubbed Tours “little Paris”, probably because of the similarity of some of the monuments in the two cities, and the way the center of the town and boulevards are laid out.
Wine, Cheese and Museums!
If you visit Tours, you will be able to see how some world-famous French wine like the Bourgueil, Chinon or Vouvray are produced and even better, you can taste them. Tours is well-known in France for its “rillettes”, an appetiser served on bread, also the local goat cheese and the locally made nougat. There are also a range of museums in Tours such as the Fine Arts Museum, the Rail Museum, and the Guild Museum, to name a few. Tours is situated in the Region of the Castle of the Loire, this city as its own castle but it is a perfect place if you want to learn more on the history of France and its Kings.
How to get to Tours
Tours is easily accessible either by plane to the airport which is less than 10 km from the centre of the city, or you can come to Tours by train or by car. As Tours is in the central region of France you can get to or from Paris and Bordeaux on the major motorway, the A 10, and there are many other good roads linking Tours to Rouen or Angers and Vierzon, for example. Of course from here you can also head north to Belgium or The Netherlands, or east to Germany, Switzerland or Italy.
If you do hire a campervan or motorhome from Tours, most campervan rental companies allow one-way rentals to other destinations in Europe (conditions apply).
