Home of Napoleon
Ajaccio is the capital and the most populous city of Corsica, the island in the Mediterranean Sea. Napoleon Bonaparte was born here, so there are many historic sites related to this well-known figure, such as the house he was born in, the monument in Casone Square with a statue of Napoleon (underneath which is the emperor’s grotto), the imperial chapel, and so on.
But the “imperial city” is not just about the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte; there are many other places of cultural interest, such as the Fesch museum, which after the Louvres houses the second largest collection of Italian art in any French art gallery. You can also climb to the top of the Campomoro tower, the largest in Corsica, or visit the cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l’assomption (which is also where Bonaparte was baptized).
Why not board a small train or walk to the old town which extends around the city’s harbor? The beautiful beaches of the Ajaccio Gulf with their white, fine sand beaches and the mild turquoise sea are a major drawcard. In short, this historical and town with its colourful houses and lovely beaches has a lot to offer.
Getting to Ajaccio and Corsica
Being an island, Ajaccio is accessible by either plane or ferry. Depending on your point of departure – you have a choice of Marseille, Nice, Porto Torres or Toulon – there are two to four ferries daily. The town has an international airport linking it to the major cities in France and Europe and of course its closest neighbour is Italy. Travelling in a campervan is the ideal way to get around Corsica if you want to explore the region on your own timetable. Besides the city of Ajaccio, the hinterland has a lot to offer tourists.
If you hire a campervan or motorhome from Ajaccio, most companies allow one-way rentals to a range of other destinations in Europe (conditions apply). As Corsica is an island we recommend you find research ferry timetables.
