The town of Otavi
Otavi is known as a small agricultural town in Namibia with only approximately 4,000 in population. With some of the best and relatively fertile soils found in the Otavi Mountains, cultivation of maize has become the primary economic resource. Together with two other towns, Tsumeb and Grootfontein (only 60 kilometres from each other), they form an area known as the ‘Otavi Triangle’, “Golden Triangle’ or ‘Golden Triangle’. In the past, Otavi was known for its mineral wealth. Though with most deposits now exhausted, the town now functions more as a copper-mining and farming centre.
Otavi is located in the Otjozondjupa region in Namibia. From the capital, Windhoek, it only takes about three and half hours to drive to the town. It is connected by railway stations to Oshikango and Oshakati but you can surely drive your campervan from those locations.
There are only a handful of attractions in Otavi but are definitely worthwhile to visit. North of the town is the Khorab Memorial. It is a National Monument dedicated as the place where the Imperial German Forces officially surrendered to the Union of South Africa. 35 kilometres to the east, the Gaub Cave is found. The cave is located on the historical Farm Ghaub. Here, you can do some rock-hopping and guided tours that are best to be booked in advance.
Lastly a few kilometres further from the cave, in the National Heritage Site on Farm Hoba, the 60-ton Hoba meteorite can be found. It is said to have landed on earth 80,000 years ago and is known to be the largest metal meteorite in the world. The meteorite is made up of 82% iron and 16% nickel.
Hop on your campervan and discover the attractions only the town of Otavi can provide. Afterwhich, you can continue your adventure to neighbouring towns and cities like Namutoni, Ondangwa or Rundu.
